Semiconductor materials segment

Thin Film Materials Business
Employing advanced technology cultivated over years of doing business, we are a supplier of a wide variety of sputtering targets for semiconductor, compound semiconductor materials, high-purity metals, and more. These materials, provided on a global scale, find use cases in end products such as leading-edge IT equipment, medical instruments, and advanced electronic devices found in electric vehicles.
Tantalum and Niobium Business
Primarily driven by TANIOBIS GmbH, one of the world¡¯s leading manufacturers of tantalum and niobium, we contribute to evolution of the IoT/AI society through stable provision of products such as metal powders used in capacitors and semiconductor materials, high-purity oxides for SAW devices and optical lenses, chlorides and compounds, and superalloy additives.

Functional Materials Business
Employing advanced metal fabrication technology cultivated over years of doing business, the Company has become a global supplier of highly-advanced products such as rolled copper foils for flexible circuit boards, as well as precision copper alloys including titanium copper, Corson alloy, and phosphor bronze - all used in connectors and other parts.

Mineral Resources Business
We hold interests in several mines in Chile and are striving for stable operation and further improvement of productivity. We are also actively involved in the exploration and development of minor metal mines since demand for those metals is expected to increase in the future in the field of advanced materials.
Metals & Recycling Business
We are able to efficiently use our smelting processes to take copper concentrate and recycled raw materials and supply high-quality metal products such as copper and precious metals. These products are then used as materials for our advanced materials, as well as provided in a stable fashion in Japan and parts of Asia. In recent years, we have been contributing to the establishment of a recycling-oriented society especially through increasing the amount of recycled raw materials processed.

Green Hybrid Smelting

  • In the smelting process, recycled raw materials are melted using the heat generated by chemical reactions from copper concentrate itself, making the use of fossil fuels almost unnecessary.
  • As we increase the use of recycled raw materials, copper concentrate continues to be used as a heat source, maintaining an optimal balance between the two.

Green Hybrid Smelting was selected as one of 26 particularly noteworthy examples of Japan¡¯s circular economy initiatives in the Noteworthy Cases Collection 2022 issued by the Circular Economy Partnership, which was established by the Ministry of the Environment; the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; and Keidanren.

Initiatives to Ensure Long-Term Stable Procurement of Minor Metal Resources

To strengthen our supply chain, we are actively promoting recycling while also investing in minor metal mines and exploring new development projects.

Mibra Mine, Brazil

To secure raw materials for high-purity tantalum powder and tantalum sputtering targets, we have participated since January 2023 in a tantalum raw material production business at the Mibra Mine in Brazil, operated by AMG Brasil.

Australian Mineral Sands Project

In 2025, we concluded an agreement to acquire an interest in a mineral sands deposit development project in Australia by RZ Resources Limited, known as the Copi Project. Feasibility studies and other activities are currently underway for the project, with the aim of securing a diverse range of minerals, including minor metals and rare earths.

Start of operation at the Hitachi Mine

Founder Fusanosuke Kuhara started operation at the Hitachi Mine, launching the Mineral resources development business and the smelting and refining business. From the beginning, Kuhara sought to boost productivity by actively embracing mechanization and modernization. The Hitachi Mine was a pioneer in development as a full-fledged custom smelter that processed not only its own ores, but also ores purchased from other companies.

Construction of the Hitachi Giant Stack

The rapid growth of the Hitachi Mine's business led to a severe smoke pollution problem in the surrounding area. To deal with the pollution, the Company built what was then the world's tallest stack at 155.7 meters. It began operation in March of the following year.

Start of operation at the Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery

In order to further expand the mining, smelting and refining segments fundamental to the Company's diversified business, the Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery was built in Oita Prefecture as one of the largest such plants in Japan. It remains even to this day an important center of the Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ Group, as a leadingedge smelter boasting the world's top levels of technology and production capacity.

Kurami Works launched

With the startup of the Kurami Works (Kanagawa Prefecture), the Company made a strong entry into the metal fabrication business. Introducing the latest rolling mills, it produced phosphor bronze and other rolled copper products. By answering the needs of complex markets for flexible manufacturing of diverse products in small lots and production-to-order, while meeting demands for advanced product technology, the Company established a solid position in the metal fabrication field.

New recycling furnace built

A new recycling furnace making use of smelting techniques was built at the Hitachi Smelter & Refinery, marking the start of the recycling and environmental services business. The Company pursued recovery of valuable metals from plating sludge and other industrial waste as a business.

Isohara Works launched

The Company got into the electronic materials business in time for the rise of the electronics industry in the 1980s, making sputtering targets for semiconductors and transparent conductive films for liquid crystal displays, as well as materials for compound semiconductors. By establishing the Isohara Works (Ibaraki Prefecture) as a new main manufacturing center,
the Company expanded into development and manufacturing of copper foil and various electronics materials.

Caserones Copper Mine began production

The official opening of the Caserones Copper Mine was calebrated, and the shipment of copper concentrate was begun.

H.C. Starck Tantalum and Niobium GmbH (present TANIOBIS GmbH) shares acquired

The outstanding shares of H.C. Starck Tantalum and Niobium GmbH (present TANIOBIS GmbH), a German manufacturer of metal powders, were acquired with an eye to expanding business areas, in anticipation of dramatic demand growth for electronic components and devices.

Listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market

Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ was newly listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange on March 19, 2025. Through the listing, the Company aims to enhance corporate value by establishing a management structure that enables highly specialized and agile decision-making, achieving an optimal capital structure suited to the characteristics of its businesses, and accelerating capital investment and R&D in highly competitive fields such as semiconductor materials and information and communications materials.
